A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over safety standards.

- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
