Larian Studios Reveal a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The speculation about the recent awards show was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team might be designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—traits that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of specialized paths you can achieve by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
