RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.
The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of access tunnels leading to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
IS - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.
British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I must thank all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "They were among numerous British personnel on duty over the festive period. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."
During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN estimates Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
